Abstract
Plusieurs auteurs attribuent aux Acadiens et à leurs instituteurs l’absence d’un esprit de groupe et de solidarité d’appartenance avant la renaissance des années 1880. Par contre, il n’est pas dit clairement sur quoi se fondent ces observations. À l’aide des pétitions présentées par la minorité francophone en rapport au système scolaire, cet article vérifie la conclusion tirée par cette doctrine. Différents types de pétitions présentées au fil des ans sont étudiées dans ce texte. Elles sont produites au nom de la communauté ou signées par un grand nombre de ses membres. En outre, leur contenu est souvent éloquent. Elles permettent de remettre en question l’allégation disant que les Acadiens n’avaient aucun esprit de groupe, solidarité d’appartenance ou conscience de former une coexistence humaine particulière. Elles révèlent plutôt une activité intéressante dans un domaine que tous estiment important. Toutes les mesures recensées remontent à la période d’avant les conventions nationales acadiennes.
