Abstract
Cette recherche s’inscrit dans la continuité du projet Archipel, portant sur l’histoire démographique, sociale et économique de l’archipel français de Saint-Pierre et Miquelon de 1763 à 1920. Il s’agit de savoir s’il est possible de cerner les particularités sociodémographiques de cette population s’adonnant presque exclusivement à des activités maritimes. Les travaux précédents de l’auteur ayant exploité les données provenant des registres de l’état civil et de dénombrements couvrant la période 1763-1850, ce texte traite d’une nouvelle tranche de ce projet avec le dépouillement des recensements de 1872, 1887 et 1892 pour la seule île de Saint-Pierre. Si cette recherche n’a pas la prétention de répondre à un très grand nombre de questions, elle n’en ouvre pas moins une fenêtre sur une meilleure compréhension des réalités de cette population maritime francophone du golfe du Saint-Laurent durant le dernier tiers du xixe siècle.
