Abstract
Au cours du xvie siècle, les négociants de Vitré fondent l’essor économique de leur ville sur l’exportation des toiles, d’abord principalement vers les marchés nord-européens, puis espagnols à la fin des guerres d’Italie. Utilisées comme emballage ou comme toiles à voile, les canevas (toiles de chanvre) dont les Vitréens ont le monopole, sont appréciées dans le monde du transport maritime. En 1579, le marchand et procureur syndic Jacques Le Faucheur intervient à leur sujet auprès du comte de Laval Guy XIX. Sa requête vise à obtenir une nouvelle réglementation pour améliorer leur production et le contrôle de l’activité des tisserands. Émis au nom de la communauté négociante, ce document propose un regard inédit sur les enjeux commerciaux vitréens et sur les rapports avec le pôle productif. Le développement du commerce d’Espagne atteint son apogée en 1586 grâce à l’extension de la zone d’approvisionnement en toiles. Les bénéfices sont réinvestis dans les finances provinciales et la construction ou l’ornementation d’édifices particuliers.
