Abstract
Les recherches disponibles sur la santé des chômeurs demeurent peu développées. La plupart d’entre elles sont épidémiologiques et soulignent que les chômeurs sont davantage exposés à des problèmes de santé. Les usages de substances psychoactives (tabac, alcool, médicaments…) peuvent constituer un point de départ afin d’étudier les liens entre chômage et santé. Cette recherche visait ainsi à se déprendre de l’approche dominante des usages de produits comme des pratiques déviantes, en adoptant une approche non normative afin d’explorer le sens que les personnes donnent à leurs consommations. Pour ce faire, nous avons analysé le discours de 21 chômeurs, rencontrés lors d’entretiens individuels ou collectifs. L’analyse thématique des entretiens met en évidence plusieurs fonctions recherchées à travers les usages (anesthésiante, stimulante, sociale). Il en ressort que c’est la fonction « anesthésiante » des substances qui prédomine dans le discours des participants, et ce, afin de résister aux effets du chômage.
