Cet article reprend à son compte le concept d’humiliation que B. Badie analyse comme pathologie des relations internationales contemporaines et l’applique au Moyen-Orient actuel. Focalisé sur les pratiques des puissances occidentales porteuses de l’ordre normatif contemporain, l’argument central est que les politiques adoptées dans les contextes volatils des années 2000 et 2010 sont productrices d’humiliation et, par conséquent, d’instabilité. Mettant en lumière les différentes sources de cette humiliation et la multiplicité d’échelles sur lesquelles elle opère, cet article analyse les apports d’une lecture badienne des turbulences que traverse la région. Il propose également de la compléter par une perspective postcoloniale située dans la continuité de la critique de l’orientalisme proposée par Edward Saïd. Cette perspective permet de mieux comprendre les relations de pouvoir qu’expriment les politiques génératrices d’humiliation. Ce faisant, elle contribue à désessentialiser le regard souvent porté sur cette région, ses populations et sa conflictualité.
