Abstract
Pour peu qu’on la déplace sur le plan de la mémoire collective, la notion de vulnérabilité s’avère particulièrement efficace pour évoquer le danger d’effacement qui pèse sur les meurtres de masse des Sioux dans Tristesse de la terre. Ce récit historique d’Éric Vuillard suit de manière critique l’ascension et le déclin du Wild West show, spectacle crée en 1883 par Buffalo Bill Cody qui proposait aux spectateurs d’assister à une mise en scène de la conquête de l’Ouest. De ce divertissement, le récit dit qu’il équivaut à un gommage instantané qui substitue un grand récit de conquête glorieuse au souvenir des massacres des Amérindiens. Dans une perspective sociocritique, cet article se demande donc comment les effacements, les réécritures et les mises en scène spectaculaires que raconte Tristesse de la terre constituent une vulnérabilité au carré : ciblant les vulnérables qui ont déjà été victimes de massacres de masse, l’amnésie collective y fait peser la menace d’une annihilation mémorielle de grande envergure qui redouble l’extermination collective par son engloutissement dans l’oubli.
