Prenant leur essor au début des années 2010, en France, les études animales et la zoopoétique font écho au fort intérêt qui s’observe pour les questions éthiques depuis le tournant du vingt-et-unième siècle, une période où de profondes mutations ont reconfiguré l’étude de la littérature contemporaine. Cet article part cependant du constat selon lequel l’engagement qui sous-tend une littérature portée vers autrui ne s’articule pas selon les mêmes modalités, selon que l’on reconnaisse l’existence d’une vie intérieure aux figures « anonymes » que l’on cherche à réintégrer dans la mémoire collective, à l’instar de la biofiction, ou selon qu’il existe une ambiguïté quant au degré selon lequel cet « autrui » serait doté d’une conscience, comme c’est le cas dans les études animales. Le cas de l’Histoire du lion Personne de Stéphane Audeguy témoigne des limites de ces recoupements, et démontre que la tentative elle-même de peindre la vie intérieure des bêtes illustre implicitement la nature plus programmatique que rétrospective de l’engagement zoopoétique, soucieux de freiner leur disparition.
