Abstract. his study aims to improve our understanding of the spatial and temporal variability in precipitation including inter-annual variations in an attempt to more accurately model rural watershed hydrology and provide optimum water management strategies. In 2009, Mishra et al developed a methodology using the entropy theory to investigate the intra-annual and decadal distributions of precipitation amounts in the State of Texas. This study has adopted the entropy theory and extends the methodology developed by Mishra et al (2009) to analyze the spatial and temporal precipitation variability in southern Ontario. Spatial variability of annual precipitation is observed to be increasing from east to west in southern Ontario. The months of February and October were the major contributor to mean decadal apportionment entropy disorder index (DEDI).
