Abstract
This chapter provides a brief historical overview of the eight editions of the guide from 1942 to 2007, outlines their critiques, and documents the most recent changes to Canada’s healthy eating strategy in 2019. Written against the backdrop of national food rationing of the 1930s, as well as Second World War military efforts, the 1942 “official” Food Rules were established as a strategy quite literally to strengthen the nation. Relatively minor changes were made to Canada’s Food Rules in 1944, including removing the term “official” from its designation. The five food groups remained in the 1949 version of the Food Rules, but several other relatively minor edits were made. The 1992 edition marked another change in title, image, and messaging for the guide. Further entrenching a neoliberal rhetoric of food choice, in Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating the word “choose” appeared five times on the front page alone.
