Abstract
This chapter examines the struggle between British colonists and Indians on the frontier in the aftermath of the Seven Years&s; War. While colonists hoped to exploit Indian lands with the expulsion of the French, some Native leaders, like the Ottawa Pontiac, hoped to form great multitribal coalitions to drive the British out. To restore a measure of control, British authorities had to squelch pan-Indianism and restrain their own colonists. British officers would resort to desperate measures, including smallpox, in an attempt to defeat Indian warriors, while colonial authorities showed little ability to protect friendly Indians, despite the Proclamation of 1763. While Anglo-Americans railed about Indian attacks, the era witnessed numerous brutal attacks on peaceable Indians. By the eve of the Revolution, both colonists and their officials had become brazen in taking Indian lands through treaty or war.
