Abstract
Les bases administratives du secteur de la santé au Canada ne comportent pas d’informations socio-économiques. Pour faciliter la prise en compte des inégalités socio-économiques de santé à des fins de planification, cette étude propose un indice canadien de défavorisation matérielle et sociale. On y présente le concept de défavorisation, les aspects méthodologiques relatifs à la construction de l’indice et un exemple de son utilisation concernant la mortalité prématurée (avant l’âge de 75 ans). Les variations de la défavorisation et ses liens avec la mortalité sont illustrés à l’échelle du Canada et selon le milieu géographique : les régions métropolitaines de recensement (RMR) de Toronto, Montréal et Vancouver, les autres RMR, les villes de taille moyenne (AR), les petites villes et le monde rural, et les cinq régions canadiennes, soit l’Atlantique, le Québec, l’Ontario, les Prairies et la Colombie-Britannique. La défavorisation matérielle et sociale et ses liens avec la mortalité varient considérablement selon le milieu géographique. Ces résultats sont commentés, de même que le sont les limites de l’indice et ses possibilités pour la planification de la santé.
