Abstract
The Vimy Monument which marks Canada’s war dead was unveiled in July 1936 on the site of one of Canada’s most important First World War battles, the capture of Vimy Ridge in April 1917. To mark this event, a pilgrimage was organised from Canada which included over 6,000 Canadians, and a film, Salute to Valour, was created by the Government to document the pilgrimage and the unveiling. The film was intended as a record of the event but also as an audio-visual memorial for those Canadians who were unable to travel to France. The memory of the Battle of Vimy Ridge and the Vimy Monument has grown in importance but the film of the pilgrimage and the unveiling has been lost to history. While it is difficult to discuss a film when it has been lost, this chapter explores the making of Salute to Valour, its context of creation, reception by audiences, and its history as a record of remembrance. This article concludes with a discussion of lost audiovisual records and archives and how this affects commemoration and the memory of an event.
