Le mentorat suscite un intérêt grandissant partout au pays. La littérature reconnaît que le jumelage entre une personne d’expérience (le mentor) et une autre moins expérimentée (le mentoré), est un moyen efficace de développement professionnel et d’apprentissage des individus. On fait appel à cette pratique notamment pour soulager la surcharge professionnelle, intégrer de nouveaux employés, retenir les talents à l’interne et briser l’isolement. Le mentorat peut prendre différentes formes et procure des avantages non seulement au mentoré et au mentor, mais également à l’organisation. Lorsqu’organisé de façon formelle, en programme, les bénéfices sont nombreux et comprennent le transfert naturel des connaissances et des compétences clés, la valorisation d’une culture d’apprentissage, une meilleure collaboration entre les services, l’amélioration des habiletés de gestion et le soutien à la diversité. Après avoir énumérées 10 conditions de succès préalables à l’implantation d’un programme, les auteures présentent les étapes requises pour le mettre en place dans son milieu. En pleine progression, le mentorat amène aussi son lot de défis alors que certains pourraient être tentés de contourner les étapes et d’accorder moins de rigueur dans l’implantation du programme. Ainsi, il importe de rappeler l’importance de favoriser une culture mentorale qui repose sur des bases solides, lesquelles contribuent à soutenir le développement professionnel.
