L’objectif de cet article est de restituer la logique qui structure la production littéraire francophone belge depuis les prémices de l’indépendance jusqu’à la transformation de l’État unitaire en un État fédéral qui a peu d’équivalent au monde. Ce terminus ad quem est en outre celui qui voit, au pays, la proclamation de la belgitude et, dans le monde, l’émergence des francophonies littéraires. Les spécificités de l’invention de la première littérature francophone stricto sensu – qui plus est, d’une francophonie originaire – s’expliquent par une intrication insuffisamment prise en compte entre Histoire d’un vieux pays récent, qui ne saurait devenir un État-nation au sens canonique du terme, et du/des rapports à une langue maternelle devenue le coeur de l’identité du grand voisin français. Le pas de deux qui s’ensuit fait l’objet de ces pages.
