À rebours des études qui considèrent l’invisibilité comme une composante invariable de l’infrastructure, cet article propose une étude historique des manières dont la présence physique de l’énergie a évolué dans la métropole du Canada d’alors, Montréal, sur plus de soixante ans. Pour fixer le cas à l’étude, il s’appuie d’abord sur les plans d’assurance afin de documenter l’évolution de l’emprise spatiale de l’énergie en contextes résidentiel et industriel, constatant la disparition graduelle du bois et du charbon au profit du pétrole, du gaz et de l’hydroélectricité, soit des formes d’énergie distribuées en réseau. Il offre ensuite une analyse fine de la vive controverse autour des réseaux aériens de fils et de poteaux qui menaçaient autant les corps que l’ordre économique au tournant du XX e siècle. Le rôle des différents acteurs, en particulier celui joué par l’industrie de l’assurance incendie, dans la trajectoire sinueuse menant vers l’enfouissement encadré par la municipalité est analysé. Ces résultats empiriques permettent de complexifier le concept d’invisibilité tel qu’appliqué à l’infrastructure, soutenant que celui-ci est historiquement, géographiquement et socialement situé. Il faut plutôt comprendre l’invisibilité comme un principe vers lequel tendent les planificateurs des systèmes que comme une caractéristique invariable de l’infrastructure. La possibilité d’accomplissement de ce principe dépend d’un contexte social et économique propice, comme celui qui s’est manifesté à Montréal à la fin des années 1900 et qui est présenté dans cet article.
