Abstract
We present here the results of the first, and crucial, part of a complete research program. Our study examines street youth from diverse cultural groups of recent immigrants to Canada, and who are currently residents of community-supported housing. In our field, the terms employed – youth, street, ethnocultural identity, and community-supported housing – may often connote specific meanings. Each constitutes an issue area in itself, and each gives rise to a great deal of scientific research. But these particular four terms have rarely, if ever, been studied in combination. This research gap constituted the first problem encountered, since from the start there were few hints in the literature. The second problem, however, is more directly related to the discussion at hand: it resides in the observation that there are as many basic methodological problems as there are meanings that one may attach to the different terms.
