Abstract
La Légende d’Ulenspiegel (1867), roman fondateur de la littérature belge francophone, participe d’un discours public belge sur l’histoire nationale se donnant pour objectif la revalorisation de celle-ci à travers la littérature. Or, ayant cours depuis l’indépendance de la Belgique en 1830, ce discours sera reconnu comme légitime seulement à partir des années 1880. Dans le sillage du mythos ricoeurien, compris comme « mise en intrigue » du passé, cet article montre qu’à travers son roman, Charles De Coster oeuvre pour une remise de la Belgique dans « la grande Histoire ». Il y parvient par l’hybridation épique de deux héros ancrés dans l’imaginaire collectif belge : l’un légendaire – Ulenspiegel –, l’autre historique – le Gueux.
