Abstract
Cette relecture d’un tableau tardif de Titien s’intéresse à son contexte sociohistorique, l’épidémie de peste de San Carlo à Venise qui aurait emporté le peintre en 1576. En adoptant l’angle de la peste noire, l’auteure fait valoir l’importance de la couleur noire qui est pigment, mais aussi signe sur la peau du pestiféré, symbole du diable dans la tradition chrétienne et dominante de l’humeur mélancolique. Ainsi, la fable d’Ovide telle qu’illustrée par Titien peut se lire comme la rencontre de savoirs médicaux, de croyances et de sensibilités propres au xvie siècle finissant.
