En el ano 2013 se realizo una evaluacion temporal de los niveles de hidrocarburos aromaticos policiclicos (HAPs) en los sedimentos de la Bahia de Cartagena, seleccionando diez estaciones de muestreo en dos epocas diferentes. Para determinar las concentraciones HAPs se uso un cromatografo de gases y un detector de masas selectivos, siendo el fluoreno el compuesto que presento el valor mas alto en la estacion cerca de la isla de Tierrabomba en la epoca seca con 154,78 ng/g, superando los limites aprobadas por el Comite Federal Provincial y Territorial de Agua Potable, la Salud y el Medio Ambiente de Canada. Mediante estos resultados se podria inferir que existe un aporte de estos compuestos debido al movimiento portuario en esta bahia
