L’univers de représentation créé par Paul Willems traduit un rapport à l’imaginaire très particulier. Celui-ci semble atteindre un seuil paroxystique dans Le Pays noyé , récit qui s’éloigne de l’esthétique magico-réaliste pour explorer une forme inédite de narration, marquée par les grands bouleversements de l’histoire du XX e siècle. À travers la confrontation de figures antinomiques, l’exploration sur le mode irrationnel des éléments de la matière, la superposition de strates temporelles véhiculant des mondes idylliques ou barbares, Willems donne naissance à un récit fascinant qui, au-delà des registres du fantastique réel, plonge ses racines dans la magnificence du mal absolu et le désenchantement des arcanes du rêve.
