La vision dominante du consentement à la recherche, concevant l’autonomie comme individuelle, s’applique mal aux relations de proximité et/ou à long terme établies sur des terrains de recherche qualitative. Une conception relationnelle de l’autonomie suggèrerait plutôt une démarche itérative de consentement qui reconnaisse les enjeux liés aux rapports de pouvoir et d’interdépendance, ainsi que les besoins des participant·e·s. Je soutiens que cette conception permet aussi de se concentrer sur le bien-être des participant·e·s plutôt que sur leur aptitude à consentir à la recherche. À travers un consentement relationnel – itératif et co-construit – elle permet alors d’inclure des participant·e·s qui ne sont en mesure de performer qu’un consentement partiellement éclairé.
