Elles s’appelaient Jennie Sheffer, Sarah Fox, Églantine Bastien, Pauline Yerisslavitz ou encore Delphine Guertin. Il y a un siècle, ces femmes mariées de la bourgeoisie ont été impliquées dans des procès mettant en jeu leur statut social et leur place au sein de la bonne société québécoise. En étudiant scrupuleusement leurs péripéties judiciaires, Thierry Nootens, professeur d’histoire à l’Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, livre une œuvre foisonnante, au croisement de l’histoire du droit, des études de genre et de la sociologie des élites. Il y met en évidence la place du droit et des juges dans le maintien d’une société patriarcale, où les rôles féminins et masculins ne sont rien moins qu’opposés et où les femmes sont les plus exposées au risque de déroute économique et sociale, advenant des avanies professionnelles ou conjugales.
