La fabrique d’une loi. Retour sur la « grande ordonnance de réforme de 1254 »Célèbre et célébrée par l’historiographie, la « grande » ordonnance de 1254, ensemble de prescriptions édictées par Louis IX en vue de moraliser son administration locale et, au-delà, le royaume tout entier, est un monument normatif dont on connaît mal la fabrique, à l’image de l’ensemble de la production normative de la France du xiiie siècle. Dans la lignée des travaux menés depuis 2010 sur l’écriture de la loi au Moyen Âge, cet article, entièrement consacré à la célèbre ordonnance, entend proposer une micro-histoire de la production législative à une époque où le Parlement et la Chambre des Comptes, principales chambres d’enregistrement de la loi aux siècles suivants, se détachent à peine de la curia regis. Sont ainsi mis au jour les multiples phases de rédaction de cette loi, sa diffusion, son enregistrement, sa conservation, ses sources, ses auteurs, de même que les mécanismes qui aboutirent à sa promulgation et à sa monumentalisation.
