Bureaucratic violence, barred bodies, and frames of control in Angelina Maccarone’s <i>Unveiled</i>

Abstract
Angelina Maccarone’s film is the powerful story of a female Iranian asylum seeker Fariba who assumes the identity of a male countryman to avoid deportation in Germany and is exposed to various forms of physical, emotional, and bureaucratic violence. Through close textual analysis, this essay critically analyzes the cinematographic and narrative content of one particular sequence and argues how regulatory power structures of the state determine Fariba’s legibility as a body that matters. As such, the filmic figure becomes what I call a barred subject due to the exposure to bureaucratic violence.
