Le cas spécifique des dépôts dits « votifs » ou « funéraires » de la fin de l’âge du Bronze dans la résurgence de la Lesse, petit affluent de la Meuse, à hauteur du village de Han (province de Namur, Belgique) est ici considéré comme exemplatif de la difficulté des interprétations en archéologie. Après un rappel des grandes écoles de la démarche interprétative, il est souligné la voie ouverte par Alain Testart à travers son approche ethnoarchéologique, notamment – mais pas seulement – grâce à son étude des armes en zones humides ( Les armes dans les eaux , Testart, 2013). Sans doute est-il temps d’affirmer l’importance de cette nouvelle manière d’envisager l’interprétation en archéologie, qui échappe aux culs-de-sac des modèles précédents. Le peu de succès, jusqu’à présent, de la démarche tient sans doute aux exigences de l’exercice, qui demande érudition et travail de longue haleine. L’exemple proposé dans l’article est une modeste actualisation de cette « troisième voie » dans l’interprétation, après l’archéologie processuelle et celle dite post-processuelle.
