Natural Radioactivity in Some Groundwaters of the Canadian Shield

Abstract
The variability between wells illustrates the need for individual well monitoring even within a small geographic area and is analogous to the variation in radium levels in adjacent wells in Illinois reported by Lucas. As part of the research, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited has constructed an Underground Research Laboratory in a granitic batholith near Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba, to provide a representative geological environment in which to pursue experiments related to the program. As part of the pre-operational environmental survey, measurements of natural radioactivity were made in surface and well waters of the vicinity. A similar survey was later done at a second hydrogeological research site near Atikokan, in northwestern Ontario. The study of uranium concentrations in groundwaters is being extended to cover a larger region of southeastern Manitoba. Considerable variation in excess radon concentrations was observed in the groundwaters of the Atikokan area. A similar survey was carried out in the Atikokan region of northwestern Ontario.
