Abstract
Le présent article vise à éclairer la dimension plus ludique de l’Association catholique de la jeunesse canadienne-française (ACJC) à partir d’une analyse des activités du cercle Langevin. Mis sur pied en 1910 dans la paroisse de La Nativité d’Hochelaga, le cercle Langevin s’inscrit dans le créneau très militant et combattif de l’ACJC, tout en laissant place à d’importants moments de loisir. Ses membres expriment à la fois une volonté d’engagement idéologique et un esprit de jeu propre à la jeunesse de l’époque. Pour mieux faire ressortir ces deux facettes, nous nous sommes centrés sur les dix premières années d’existence du cercle (1910-1920), car nous pouvions, pour cette période, appuyer nos interprétations sur une lecture de la revue du cercle, La Semence, en plus d’un dépouillement du Fonds de l’ACJC conservé à la Société historique du Saguenay. Nos recherches permettent de découvrir un organisme plus festif et plus récréatif que ce que l’on a pu supposer jusqu’à maintenant.
