Литературное творчество Виктора Петровича Астафьева (1924–2001) богато автобиографическими элементами. Существенное место в его произведениях занимает категория памяти. Писатель, являющийся участником Великой Отечественной войны, запечатлел в своей прозе трагический военный опыт. Главной целью Астафьева не было увековечить героический образ победной войны, укоренившийся в коллективной памяти, но посмотреть на войну через призму индивидуальной памяти с далекой временной перспективы. Эта художественная стратегия реализуется в нашумевших романах Прокляты и убиты (1990–1994) и Веселый солдат (1998). Анализ этих произведений позволяет сделать вывод, что Астафьев не забыл о сталинском тоталитаризме, уничтожившем гуманистические и религиозные ценности. Уважение к правде заставило писателя воссоздать мрачную картину войны, которая по идеологическим причинам была забыта.
