Schemas are cognitive structures that help organize new knowledge by integrating it with previous information or changing the underlying network. Immanuel Kant's initial work outlined how schemas help individuals learn, but it was not until the 1900s that empirical research began to examine how these structures develop and influence behavior. Schemas are particularly influential in interpersonal interactions because individuals want to maintain a consistent view of themselves but also of others. Self-schemas are a major component of personality, and people are categorized as being schematic or aschematic on a dimension based on whether their ratings of that dimension are at the high end or low end of the scale and also endorsed as being important vs. at the midpoint of the scale and deemed unimportant.
