He was one of the founders of CICESE and its Department of Seismology. Juanito (as some colleagues called him) was born and grew up at Torreón city in the state of Coahuila, Mexico. He obtained his bachelor's degree from the Facultad de Ciencias at National University of Mexico (UNAM). Then, he moved to the University of Toronto, Canada, where he obtained a master's degree in science...
