Abstract
This essay provides extracts of an interview conducted by the author with Canadian gay liberation activist Chris Bearchell in 1996. It covers topics including the relationship between gay liberation, the women’s movement and the autonomous lesbian movement during the 1970s and 1980s, the emergence of a backlash against the gay rights movement, the emergence of pro-family rhetoric in lesbian and gay politics in the 1980s and 1990s, and the divisions over violence against women and pornography among feminists in the 1980s and 1990s.
