Abstract
Cette réflexion vise à dégager un sens clinique aux résultats obtenus d’une étude empirique réalisée à partir d’un vaste échantillon d’adolescents canadiens de l’ Enquête longitudinale nationale sur les enfants et les jeunes (ELNEJ). La réflexion débouche sur des interprétations voulant que les jeunes les plus vulnérables aux symptômes dépressifs finissent par présenter soit des problèmes extériorisés, soit des problèmes mixtes (extériorisé/intériorisé) avec dévalorisation de soi. Une faible estime de soi semble une variable cardinale associée à l’apparition des pensées suicidaires. Pour aider ces jeunes et leur entourage, les auteurs proposent d’orienter les efforts vers une prévention individualisée axée sur l’apprentissage de compétences psychosociales visant l’adolescent dans son milieu de vie.
