La place de la musique dans l’éducation au Québec est un sujet lancinant. Les sentiments du public oscillent entre la peur de la voir disparaître de la grille matière et l’assurance qu’elle y restera d’une manière ou d’une autre. Où donc s’alimente cette ambivalence ? Peut-être dans le concept même de l’éducation musicale. Dans son article, Claude Dauphin s’efforce de cerner l’objet premier de l’éducation musicale, le distinguant de celui de la formation musicale. L’un s’allie à l’éducation, l’autre connote la préparation des musiciens professionnels. S’attachant à la première acception, l’auteur examine les formes du matériel pédagogique destiné à la musique scolaire. Plus avant, il s’arrête surtout à décrire l’activité des chercheurs dans le domaine de l’éducation musicale : les sujets des mémoires et des thèses dans les universités québécoises, les disciplines associées et le rayonnement des professeurs d’universités qui ont élu comme champ de recherche la musique et l’éducation.
