Abstract
The question of how personality functions within culture has received much attention from both personality and cultural psychologists. Studies have shown that there are pronounced cultural differences in how personality and the self are conceptualized. In Western cultures, individuals are more likely to have an independent self-construal whereas in Eastern cultures, they are more likely to have an interdependent self-construal. There are also cultural differences in whether or not the self is perceived as stable across situations and over time. Researchers have even observed differences in the degree to which personality traits like extraversion and openness to experience are expressed across cultures. In addition, there exists some debate about whether individuals from non-Western cultural contexts possess traits that are not captured by the Five Factor Model of Personality. Overall, studies of personality in culture reveal that one's cultural context plays a substantial role in how the self is understood, and how personality is expressed.
