Abstract

Artikel ini bermaksud untuk menggambarkan dan menjelaskan Totem sebagai dasar agama lokal di Biak yang dapat membentuk jejaring sosio religius kultural masyarakat Biak. Metode etnografi dan teknik fenomenologi digunakan, serta untuk mendapatkan data, diperoleh dari observasi partisipan, wawancara dan studi pustaka.
 Setiap manusia yang memiliki potensi adalah manusia adat dan tradisi. Ia terbina, teresapi dan terlibat dengan seluruh cara, aturan, hukum, ajaran adat dan tradisi tersebut. Adat dan tradisi adalah suatu warisan rohani masyarakat yang diritualisasikan berulang-ulang kali sehingga maknanya dimengerti dan diresapi. Adat dan tradisi itu tidak hanya diceritakan, tetapi juga disimbolkan ke dalam nama-nama tertentu, tempat atau benda. Artikel ini menyingkapkan bahwa jejaring sosio religius kultural orang Biak, bukan hanya terbentuk karena proses perjumpaan di masa lalu, tetapi sebaliknya ikatan sosio religius kultural orang Biak hidup melalui totem yang merupakan implementasi dari penghormatan kepada Tuhan. Demikian artikel ini menyimpulkan bahwa totem sebagai dasar agama lokal di Biak.
