Abstract
On remarque dans L’Étranger un emploi surprenant de la ponctuation : Camus semble privilégier une ponctuation « structurelle » (point, virgule, deux-points, point-virgule et tiret) plutôt qu’une ponctuation « expressive » (point d’exclamation, point d’interrogation, points de suspension), en particulier dans des séquences de discours rapporté. Cette « monotonie de la ponctuation » empêche le lecteur d’entendre la voix qui précède le texte et celle qui rapporte les discours : elle les déforme en leur attribuant un autre ton et, parfois, un sens différent. Rare mais systématique, cette perturbation de l’énonciation est significative s’agissant du personnage de Meursault et du récit en général. Cet article analyse ces phénomènes de ponctuation, qui permettent de décrire le rapport absurde du narrateur au langage et de comprendre le rapport ironique de l’auteur à son style, l’écriture blanche constituant un processus de distanciation de lui-même.
