Abstract
Originaire du Québec, Rossel Vien a vécu la majeure partie de sa vie au Manitoba où il a mené une vie publique consacrée aux médias, à l’histoire et à la poésie. Sous des pseudonymes, il a publié des nouvelles à thématique homosexuelle tant au Québec qu’au Manitoba. Ce faisant, il a exercé dans l’anonymat une présence subversive à Saint-Boniface. Le milieu conservateur de ce haut lieu franco-manitobain avait besoin des multiples talents de Rossel Vien, mais ne pouvait admettre sa différence. Ce texte aborde l’homme et l’oeuvre sous cette double réalité. La première partie situe Rossel Vien dans le contexte historique et social du Manitoba français qu’il a connu. Une analyse de sa nouvelle « Le juge » illustre l’ampleur de l’action dérangeante qui fut la sienne. La seconde partie cerne la place qu’il occupe dans l’histoire de la littérature canadienne de langue française à thématique homosexuelle, québécoise vu les circonstances de son époque. Sa nouvelle « Un homme de trente ans » révèle à quel point il mérite de prendre place parmi les précurseurs qui ont permis à ce qui allait devenir la littérature à thématique gaie de s’affirmer au grand jour, libérée des préjugés et des interdits qui avaient prévalu jusqu’alors.
