Abstract
The notion of the “native speaker” is widely used in pedagogical contexts and among the general public. The term tends to refer to someone who speaks a language that they have known from birth. However, the theoretical literature and practical difficulties of defining what constitutes a native speaker are replete with controversies, both conceptual and political, as well as difficulties of applying the concept within pedagogical contexts.
