Le paysage des espaces protégés est un élément souvent attaché à la notion de « patrimoine naturel » ; mais les espaces protégés ont bien souvent, en plus de la mission de protection, celle d’ouvrir leur territoire au tourisme. Alors, ce patrimoine semble mis à mal, le tourisme apparaissant souvent comme un perturbateur pour le paysage de ces lieux. Le rapport de ces espaces au tourisme semble donc très ambivalent, comme d’ailleurs celui au paysage, car bien souvent, les éléments « naturels » qui le constituent sont appréciés de manière très relative par les techniciens de ces espaces. Parmi les trois espaces protégés européens étudiés, le cas du parc national du Lake District, en Angleterre, entretient un rapport moins conflictuel au tourisme, car ce dernier est vu non pas comme un perturbateur, mais comme une composante essentielle du patrimoine de ce lieu. Le « patrimoine » se détache alors du « naturel » pour devenir « paysager », laissant alors la place à toutes les traces des activités humaines.
