Abstract
En 1908, Clementina Trenholme Fessenden demande une reconnaissance officielle au premier ministre canadien pour son activisme dans la création de l’Empire Day. Le succès populaire de l’Empire Day atteste du sens politique de Trenholme puisque les liens avec l’Empire britannique sont considérés comme des composantes indispensables de l’identité canadienne à l’époque. Pourtant, le premier ministre Wilfrid Laurier et ses successeurs refusent de reconnaître Trenholme comme la fondatrice de l’Empire Day. Cet article porte sur le rapport genré à la reconnaissance publique. En dépit du succès de l’Empire Day, Trenholme ne reçoit aucune reconnaissance de la part de l’État canadien, ce qui la relègue aux « angles morts de l’histoire ».
