Abstract
GAËLLA LOISEAU L'irrésistible étrangeté des gens du voyage L ' étranger est celui qui arrive de l' extérieur.Constamment ramené à cette position d' extériorité, il est régulièrement mis au défi de parvenir à faire sa place dans le monde qu'il aborde, tout en conservant l'empreinte d'un monde autre, d'un « ailleurs ».S'interroger sur les manières dont il est possible de « devenir l' étranger » des uns ou des autres, suppose d'identifier le vecteur d' étrangeté qui participe de ce processus.Dans cet article, nous proposons de revenir sur les moyens étatiques qui ont été mis en œuvre au tournant du xx ème siècle pour façonner les nomades en tant qu'« étrangers de l'intérieur 1 ».Mais nous irons aussi observer comment ces stigmates de l' étrangeté voyageuse essaiment et contaminent les cercles voyageurs eux-mêmes.Recensés comme « nomades » à l' échelle du territoire national en 1895, les Gitans du Roussillon, les Manouches d'Alsace, les Sinté de Provence furent assujettis à partir de 1912 au port d'un carnet anthropométrique, Gaëlla Loiseau est anthropologue, docteure en sociologie, membre de l'umr 6266 de l'Université du Havre et associée au leris à Montpellier, spécialiste des modes de vie mobiles et alternatifs.Elle a réalisé sa thèse sur les espaces de vie des gens du voyage, ainsi qu'un webdocumentaire intitulé Des Aires.Vivre en habitat mobile, accessible en ligne (www.desaires.fr). 1.
