Abstract
À partir des sources iconographiques d’un traité de morale du xiiie siècle, l’article examine les représentations des instruments de mesure et des gestes de ceux qui les manient. Le dominicain italien Jacques de Cessoles rédige vers 1270 le Liber de ludo scacchorum, traduit en français sous le titre de Livre des échecs moralisés, où le jeu d’échecs représente une cité idéale, composée de pièces censées personnifier les différents états de la société. Outre sa position symbolique sur l’échiquier, chaque pion est doté d’une image matérielle, avec les attributs caractérisant son activité. Ainsi le marchand et le gardien des villes sont-ils associés à des instruments de mesure, balance, poids ou aune. Parmi les deux cents manuscrits conservés de cet ouvrage, nombreuses sont les versions enluminées, produites à partir de 1318 et durant tout le xve siècle, en France, en Allemagne et en Italie, qui permettent de saisir et de comparer la matérialité et la variété des instruments de mesure médiévaux.
