Abstract
Essentiellement nationaliste et résolument engagé à la conservation et à la défense des valeurs traditionnelles canadiennes-françaises, La Patrie (1879-1957) n’a jamais dérogé à sa mission. Journal d’un peuple en crise d’identité, il a voulu rejoindre ses lecteurs par le biais de divers domaines, dont celui des arts. À partir de 1920, le journal a accordé un espace rédactionnel accru à la culture en confiant à Gustave Comte la chronique « Théâtre, musique, cinéma ». Particulièrement significatifs des idéologies et des goûts de la société, les textes adoptent un ton éditorial dont le message s’appuie sur des valeurs patrimoniales héritées d’un passé indéracinable. Dans un tel contexte, était-il possible de faire quelques percées vers la modernité ? Des éléments de réponse sont apportés par Henri Letondal et Jean Nolin, deux critiques dont les propos ouvrent de nouvelles perspectives. De même, la chronique « La Musique » de Léo-Pol Morin donnera les « coups de poing » nécessaires à l’évolution d’une société menacée d’étouffement par sa richesse même.
