A cavalcade of events celebrating the centenary of the First World War and the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II in 2014 was followed, in 2016, with the commemoration of the battles of Verdun and the Somme. While much attention has justifiably been focused on European literature paying tribute to the many soldiers lost in battle, African and Caribbean voices have, unfortunately, largely been ignored.
