Cet article analyse l’impact majeur de la politique étrangère cubaine pendant la Guerre froide sur deux régions : l’Amérique latine et l’Afrique. Il étudie également les relations de La Havane avec les États-Unis et avec l’Union soviétique, et évalue dans quelle mesure la politique cubaine était fonction des exigences soviétiques. Il est fondé sur plusieurs années de recherche dans les archives cubaines, américaines et sud-africaines, ainsi que, entre autres, dans les archives de la France, de la Grande-Bretagne, de l’Allemagne de l’Est, de l’Allemagne de l'Ouest, de la Belgique, de la Pologne, de la Serbie, du Canada et de la Zambie.
