Abstract
La création de l'École française d'Athènes en septembre 1846, tout en ancrant la présence de la France dans la capitale du nouvel État grec, marque également, pour plusieurs générations de jeunes normaliens qui y séjournent, le début d'une exploration systématique de la Grèce et du Levant. Pendant les premières décennies, cette exploration n'a rien de scientifique : les jeunes membres de l'École d'Athènes ne font que visiter les hauts-lieux de l'Antiquité grecque pour s'imprégner de “l'atmosphère antique”. Progressivement toutefois, notamment sous l'effet d'une émulation croissante avec l'Allemagne après 1870, leurs voyages cessent d'être des épopées romantiques pour devenir de véritables campagnes de fouilles, au cours desquelles les “Athéniens” précisent leur méthode archéologique. Cette crédibilité scientifique nouvelle contribue au renforcement de l'influence française en Grèce, vocation première de l'École française d'Athènes.
