Les comédies cinématographiques françaises ont souvent utilisé des situations d’hospitalité pour mettre en scène des couples et duos interraciaux. L’évolution de ce choix de mise en scène dans l’histoire du cinéma révèle une difficulté à s’échapper d’une emphase dans les différences de classes sociales dans le récit. Certains films essayent de présenter l’hospitalité comme un mythe du vivre-ensemble multiculturel et métis. La majorité d’entre eux, toutefois, présentent des rapports de pouvoir entre hôtes et accueillis et des apprentissages asymétriques de nouveaux codes de vie qui relayent des imaginaires coloniaux et soulignent un rapport de domination du personnage blanc sur le personnage racisé.
