L’étude de la métrologie du Proche-Orient ancien consiste traditionnellement avant tout à reconstruire les valeurs relatives entre les unités de chaque système de mesure, ainsi qu’à identifier les valeurs absolues en convertissant les étalons de mesure anciens en étalons de mesure modernes. Des travaux récents cherchent néanmoins à réinterpréter ces unités anciennes dans leur contexte d’utilisation, en fonction des processus de normalisation administrative et politique, des modes d’échanges économiques et de la gestion des céréales dans les palais et les temples. L’objectif de cet article est de présenter un exemple de ce nouveau type d’étude sur les unités de mesure, à partir du cas du sila3, une unité de capacité dont l’usage a été largement diffusé en Mésopotamie pendant environ 3 000 ans. Cela nécessite, d’une part, une approche réflexive concernant les méthodologies utilisées jusqu’à présent et, d’autre part, une approche émique concernant la façon de penser, de représenter et d’utiliser la métrologie par les Mésopotamiens.
