Abstract
Dans ce laboratoire des formes romanesques qu'est le XVIIIe siècle français, Marivaux et sa Vie de Marianne tiennent une place particulière et en partie méconnue. Marivaux s'y détourne de l'ironique surenchère fictionnelle qu'il avait auparavant pratiquée dans ses « antiromans », sans pourtant se soumettre aux conventions qui régissent le vraisemblable romanesque de son époque. L'identité non authentifiable de Marianne est prétexte (mais prétexte seulement) à l'exploration de deux modes d'apparition de la vérité en régime romanesque : la « véridicité » (qui déplace de l'énoncé à l'énonciatrice la question de la vérité, devenue celle de la véracité) et la véridiction (qui, en faisant de la structure même du roman le lieu d'une possible vérité romanesque, esquive la dénonciation d'une fausseté inhérente au genre brandie par les adversaires du roman). Michel Foucault, puis Oswald Ducrot et sa théorie des présuppositions, seront principalement nos guides dans cette relecture de La Vie de Marianne en termes de véridicité et véridiction.
