Le vignoble accompagne le peuplement de l’archipel des Açores depuis le début du xve siècle dans un milieu souvent difficile. Ce vignoble de qualité a connu une grave crise sanitaire au milieu du xixe siècle. Elle a permis une nouvelle géographie des plantations et une augmentation de la production pour un marché désormais avant tout local. La fin du xxe siècle a vu la diminution rapide des paysages viticoles dans un contexte de concurrence européenne. Depuis 2004, la mise en valeur du patrimoine, la croissance du tourisme et l’arrivée de nouveaux acteurs économiques relancent des productions de qualité devenues fort prisées.
